The death of Saudi prince, identified as Abdullah bin Fahad bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Jalawi Al Saud, after an apparent drug overdose has drawn international attention and reignited conversations about substance misuse, addiction, and the dangers of combining alcohol with drugs.

As per media reports quoting the findings presented during a UK inquest, the prince died after suffering cardiac arrest caused by the combined effects of multiple substances.

The 29-year-old royal was found unresponsive in a luxury hotel in Kensington, London, where he had been staying. Toxicology reports revealed a lethal combination of alcohol, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), cannabis, xanax, and other anti-anxiety medications. Investigators concluded that the interaction of these substances led to the fatal cardiac arrest. CCTV footage and other evidence likewise showed no signs of third-party involvement.

What happens when you mix alcohol and Xanax?

According to Alcohol Help, when taken in the therapeutic dosage range, Xanax is generally considered to be safe. However, when individuals take high doses of Xanax or mix the drug with another substance such as alcohol, dangerous and potentially deadly interactions can occur. The combination of the two increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain and the overall activity of the central nervous system, which causes a sedative effect. When depressants are mixed, over-sedation occurs, which can then result in respiratory depression, cardiac arrest, and loss of consciousness. Xanax intensifies the symptoms of alcohol and vice versa.

"Combining central nervous system depressants like alcohol with recreational drugs or medications created a dangerous synergy. Alcohol amplifies the sedating effects of substances like gamma-hydroxybutarate (GHB), severely depressing brainstem function. This frequently leads to respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmia, coma, and sudden death, even at doses that might not be fatal on their own," explained Dr Sudhir Kumar, a Hyderabad-based neurologist.
