Brazilian footballer Vinícius Júnior is making headlines with his new look that almost made him unrecognisable. The Real Madrid winger recently underwent a chin harmonisation procedure in Goiânia after returning from the FIFA World Cup 2026. 

What is chin harmonisation surgery? 

Chin harmonisation (also called chin reshaping or genioplasty) refers to a tailored combination of surgical or non-surgical procedures designed to alter the size, shape, position, or projection of the chin to bring it into balance with the rest of the face - particularly the nose, lips, and jawline. 

The surgery is often performed on the lower jawline and chin area to improve proportions of the face and to help with one's confidence and self-esteem.

In genioplasty, the bone from the jaw is moved forward. Alternatively, shaped silicone implants can be used to give more projection to the chin. Also, the bone can be removed to decrease an overly projecting chin. 

What are the common risks?

The most common complications are bruising, movement of the implant, swelling, damage to the teeth and loss of feeling in the lower lip. 

The rare side effects include: 

*Blood clots

*Infection; sometimes the implant will have to be removed

*Pain that does not go away

*Numbness or other changes in feeling to the skin

Complications such as poorly healing wounds, scarring, facial unevenness, irregular skin contours, implant displacement or infection, and incorrect implant sizing can all necessitate a secondary surgery.

What to expect after the surgery

*Likely to feel some discomfort and soreness 

*Some numbness in your chin for up to 3 months, and a stretching sensation around your chin for 1 week. Most of the swelling will be gone by 6 weeks, depending on the type of procedure you had.

*You may have to stick to a liquid or soft diet for at least a day or two.

*You will probably have the outside bandage removed within a week of surgery. You may be asked to wear a neck brace while you are sleeping for 4 to 6 weeks.

*You can resume light activity the day of surgery. You should be able to return to work and your usual activities within 7 to 10 days. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions.
