Laveena Sharon, a budding lawyer who gave birth to a baby boy three months ago, shared her postpartum experience during a session at the Mpowering Minds Summit in Bengaluru.

She said that she had undergone a lot of changes ever since her pregnancy journey started, and it was altogether a very different experience for her as she had also undergone a miscarriage in 2024, which was not an easy thing for Sharon and her husband.

Finally, despite all the ups and downs, she conceived again and had a water birth in November 2025. She added in the session that she and her baby were doing fine now.

Sharing her experiences, Sharon said that she had been married to her husband for three years, of which the first two saw a lot of travelling and adventure.

Gradually, there was pressure from her family members to have a child.

“In mid-2024, we decided to have a baby and I conceived naturally the very next month and unfortunately ended up having a miscarriage after seven weeks. There was no particular reason, but the baby didn't develop a heartbeat. It just stopped and I didn't know; I didn't have any symptoms ... it was at my dating scan that I heard my baby's heartbeat, and two weeks later, I just had cramps and when I had gone to my scan centre, they told me the baby is no longer there. When something unfortunate happens like this, obviously the society says that is why I told you not to plan all these things,” said Sharon.

It took a couple of challenging months for her to get over this.

Then, five months later, she conceived naturally, but also used the folic acid and progesterone pills that her doctor had recommended.

“The pregnancy was all smooth. The first dating scan taken at 6 weeks, I was able to hear baby's heartbeat again and I was very happy. This time there were no fancy announcements to the family. We kept it very private until the NT scan because ... till 13 weeks you will have to be very careful. The time from six weeks to 13 weeks was like forever. Every night and every day felt so long because the urge to listen to the baby's heartbeat again was so real. Somehow I managed until the NT scan and baby was all good. The growth; everything else was fine,” Sharon added.

"All the nine months of my gestational period, I thought I will not have a perineal tear and will do all the exercises—all the big floor muscles and all that—to strengthen, but nothing worked out. I opted for a water birth because right from my teenage, I generally had good pain tolerance,” she noted.

Laveena had a successful water birth at the Aastrika Midwifery Centre in Bengaluru, aided by Dr Janhavi Nilekani.
