Menopause has long remained an under-discussed phase in women’s lives and often is dismissed as a natural process that must simply be endured.
To change this narrative, Maharashtra has set up dedicated menopause clinics across government hospitals and urban health facilities.
As per officials, Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to start such dedicated clinics, a move expected to serve as a model for other states.
What do they provide?
The clinics provide expert medical consultation, mental health counselling, screening for bone, heart and hormonal health, along with medicines and guidance at a single location.
"Menopause is not a disease but a natural phase in a woman's life. However, women need strong physical and emotional support during this period, and these clinics have been started to ensure they receive proper advice, treatment and dignity," said Minister of State for Health Meghna Bordikar.
What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural part of ageing and marks the end of reproductive years for women.
As per the Cleveland Clinic, it is a point in time when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period and on average, it occurs around the age of 52.

Women who are going through menopause undergo immense hormonal changes that can cause uncomfortable physical and emotional symptoms.
There are three stages of menopause:
- Perimenopause/ menopause transition
- Menopause
- Postmenopause
As per experts at the Cleveland Clinic, perimenopause can begin eight to 10 years before menopause when your ovaries gradually produce less and less estrogen. Menopause is the stage when a woman no longer has menstrual periods and the postmenopause stage is for the rest of the life.
Many people experience symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes and mood swings in perimenopause.
