In a career spanning decades, Dr. Shyam Sunder Bansal has not only helped save the lives of thousands of people but also chipped away at building better and affordable healthcare.

Dr. Shyam Sunder Bansal was, quite literally so, the first qualified cardiologist from Haryana. In a career that has spanned decades now, Dr. Bansal began his journey at Escorts Hospital in 1994. From then on, he has only gone on to progress further, both as a dedicated medical professional and as a respected figure amongst his colleagues and peers.

Born in Bhiwani, Haryana, Dr. Bansal, interestingly, spent his childhood in a different city. After his parents, the late Mr. Ram Jiwan Bansal and Mrs. Tripta Bansal, moved to Jalandhar, Punjab, Dr. Bansal finished his primary schooling from the city of Jalandhar, itself. Soon after finishing his higher secondary education from DAV College, Jalandhar, Dr. Bansal immediately went on to pursue his MBBS from Guru Nanak Dev University in 1982. In 1986, having finished his MBBS programme, Dr. Bansal enrolled at B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, for an MD in Medicine, in 1988, before graduating in 1991. It was during his post-graduation where he also met his wife, Dr. Seema Bansal.

In 1994, Dr. Bansal, simultaneously, achieved his Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Diplomate of National Board in Cardiology (DNB). At the time, in 1994, DNB was considered to be an especially difficult course, with only two candidates passing the course in the entire country.

When he began his dedicated practice, Dr. Bansal was the first qualified cardiologist from Haryana. He began his career at Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, where he established and headed the Department of Cardiology for eight years. The Department of Cardiology at Escorts Hospital, at the time of its establishment, was the first Department of Cardiology in Haryana. In 2002, Dr. Bansal went on to set up the first dedicated heart centre in Haryana at the Metro Heart Institute. In his time, serving at the Metro Heart Institute, Dr. Bansal was responsible for introducing many emergent interventional heart procedures at the time. Being the first qualified cardiologist from Haryana, it was an opportunity for Dr. Bansal to help the practices and the knowledge in the region flourish. Even so, he credits his experience and time spent learning from the proctors as having a major influence on him.

In October of 2009, Dr. Bansal entered into a partnership with Metro Heart Institute as Managing Director. The partnership lasted well over a decade, before coming to a close in November of 2020. During that partnership, Dr. Bansal went on to treat over 1 lakh heart patients, performing over thousands of surgical heart procedures. In spite of all the awards he has received so far, including the Rashtriya Gaurav Award (2012) and the Ayushmann Bharat Award (2020), Dr.

Bansal considers the fact that he has helped save and better the lives of over 1 lakh people to be his crowning accomplishment.

Finally, in 2020, Dr. Bansal went on to establish SSB Heart and Multispeciality Hospital in Faridabad. As Dr. Bansal explains, the vision behind establishing the hospital was simple. Dr. Bansal and his team want to provide state-of-the-art healthcare at more affordable prices to their patients. The team at SSB Heart and Multispeciality Hospital work with one principle in mind. It is not about merely making a surgery procedure more affordable to an individual. It is about making everything more accessible and affordable without compromising on a singular aspect of the healthcare that the patients receive.

Part of Dr. Bansal’s ideology derives itself from the experiences he has had while interacting with his colleagues and peers from the field. Indeed, Dr. Bansal considers research in medical fields to be paramount. In 1995, on a medical tour abroad, Dr. Bansal went on to visit the Mayo Clinic, USA, and the Rodenberg Clinic, Germany. The purpose behind that whole visit was not only to understand and learn more about the practices by medical professionals abroad but also to bring it back to his own country, incorporating all the positive practices he had been a witness to.

For Dr. Shyam Sunder Bansal, the idea of healthcare is not only about the provision of the best possible healthcare to his patients. It is also, importantly, about fostering a degree of accessibility, trust and dependability amongst his patients.
