After a year-long delay since unveiling a first-look teaser in 2025, Netflix has officially announced a release date for its upcoming crime-drama series "Akka" with a new teaser. The Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte-fronted series is set to premiere on October 30, 2026.
Produced by YRF Entertainment and written and directed by debutant Dharmaraj Shetty, the series stars Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte in lead roles. Set in the 1980s, the show explores a fictional world of crime, power and female rule in South India.
The story takes place in Pernuru, an imaginary South Indian city built, ruled and protected by generations of women. At the centre of this world are two powerful gangster queens, Bhavani, played by Keerthy Suresh, and Rudra, played by Radhika Apte. Together, they lead a strong sisterhood that controls the city’s criminal underworld.
However, their power meets a serious challenge when a mysterious outsider arrives in Pernuru. The unexpected threat throws the carefully controlled city into chaos, forcing its rulers to fight for survival. The story promises a mix of violence, revenge, loyalty and power struggles.
Aside from Keerthy Suresh, the series features other Malayali actors such as Keerthy Suresh, Poornima Indrajith, Vishak Nair, Dinesh Prabhakar, Karthika Muraleedharan, Pooja Mohanraj, and Urmila Krishnan.
"Akka" is an original fictional story. Its unusual setting, built around a matriarchal society, promises a narrative unlike many traditional gangster dramas.
The series is produced by YRF Entertainment, the streaming division of Yash Raj Films. Aditya Chopra, Yogendra Mogre and Akshaye Widhani serve as executive producers. The production is also described as YRF Entertainment’s biggest streaming project so far, with considerable attention given to recreating the look and feel of the 1980s.
Netflix first revealed a glimpse of "Akka" on February 3, 2025, as part of its 'Next on Netflix' India announcement. After a long gap without major updates, the platform has now confirmed the release date and unveiled the first official teaser.
