The magic of Harry Potter is finally returning to the screens with its highly anticipated television series, but the latest glimpse of the adaptation has left the fans divided. The new teaser for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone revisits some of the most iconic moments from the wizarding world, including the sorting ceremony, the trio’s friendship, Quidditch and some of Potter’s first experiences at Hogwarts. The series premieres on Christmas Day this year, with the first season consisting of eight episodes.
The teaser introduces viewers to the new generation of actors, with Dominic McLaughlin as Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow appears as Professor Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.
However, the new footage has fuelled an immediate wave of comparison of the new series with the original films. Many viewers are concerned about whether the audience would be accepting of the new faces, rather than the new cast’s performance itself. A YouTube commentator encapsulated this feeling in a comment: “Kinda weird to see this when the films are still so ingrained in our consciousness.”
Others were less convinced by the new interpretations. Reacting to Paapa Essiedu’s Snape, one viewer joked, “Snape looks like he came straight from the fashion week in Milan.” Another said, “We have a Harry Potter at home,” reflected the difficulty some fans are having in separating the new adaptation from the cultural imprint of the original movies.
The teaser has also raised questions about character dynamics. “Harry Potter distrusting Snape without a reason is going to be really awkward,” one fan wrote, pointing to the different experience viewers may have when the story is retold in a television format.
The tweaks in the visual details of Hogwarts have become a point of contention among fans. The redesigned Hogwarts house emblems have drawn criticism online, with one Instagram user saying, “This is the worst thing ever. What was wrong with the OG crests?” Another asked, “Why is every emblem like vomiting something out and looking disgusted?” However, some users defend the change, with one arguing that Hogwarts was founded in the 10th or 11th century and that the new designs reflect the heraldry of the period.
Whether the new look eventually wins over sceptical viewers remains to be seen, but the teaser has already made one thing clear: returning to Hogwarts comes with enormous expectations.
