Following the explosive events of Season 3, the hit geopolitical thriller “The Diplomat” is expanding its reach globally. Season 4, which has been shot in numerous locations including London, Washington, D.C., New York, and Lucca, Italy, will premiere on October 15, 2026.
Season 4 will revolve around the plot hatched by President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and VP Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) to seize a Russian nuclear weapon, pushing the US to the brink of war. Meanwhile, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), upon realising she’s been double-crossed, forms a desperate alliance with First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) to restore international stability.
This season will also look into "two marriages eating each other alive," with a tense focus on Kate and Hal's fractured marital bond, as seen in the teaser where she says, "I, Katherine Wyler, take you for better or for worse, worse, and worse".
Keri Russell (Kate Wyler) and Rufus Sewell (Hal Wyler) return alongside new series regulars Allison Janney (President Grace Penn), Bradley Whitford (Todd Penn), and Nana Mensah (Billie Appiah). Additional cast members include Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford) and Ali Ahn (Eidra Park).
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn told Netflix Tudum that Season 4 is built on “the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd.”
“They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster,” she added. “Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”
Will there be a fifth season?
Netflix has not yet officially announced a Season 5 renewal or future seasons beyond Season 4. Given the streaming giant's past patterns, future seasons are likely, considering the show's current trajectory. Netflix has been immensely confident about this show so far. They greenlit Season 4 in May 2025, months before Season 3 even hit screens. If the pattern holds, updates regarding a potential Season 5 or a final chapter will likely emerge following the viewership performance of Season 4 after its October 15 premiere.
Cahn, in an interaction with Netflix Tudum, hinted that the complex web of political conspiracies is built for longevity. Reflecting on the show's progression, she said that at the end of each season she thinks they can't do it again, but then they dig back in because they "have to keep going."
