'VisionQuest' trailer: James Spader returns as Ultron's human form in Marvel series

Marvel Studios’ upcoming live-action series "VisionQuest" is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. The eight-episode series will be the third and final part of a connected television story that began with "WandaVision" in 2021 and continued with "Agatha All Along" in 2024. The show is expected to bring the larger Wanda Maximoff storyline to a close within Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The series’ first trailer was unveiled at Disney’s D23 fan event in Anaheim, California. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the footage alongside Bettany and Spader, who appeared on stage to discuss the project. The trailer was then released online shortly after the live presentation.

Created by showrunner Terry Matalas, "VisionQuest" will continue the story of White Vision, who regained the original Vision’s memories before leaving Westview at the end of "WandaVision". The new series follows his search for answers about who he is and what his life should mean now that he has recovered memories from a life he did not personally experience.

At its heart, the series is a story about identity, family and emotional trauma. Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum has described the central theme as “fathers and sons,” with the story exploring how pain and unresolved conflicts can pass from one generation to another.

Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader returns as Ultron, the artificial intelligence who created Vision. The cast also includes Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff, a young man who claims to be Vision’s son; Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H.; Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y.; and James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta, a hostile robot determined to destroy Vision and the planet, while Todd Stashwick appears as Paladin, a bounty hunter tracking Vision.

One of the series’ biggest surprises is Spader’s expanded role as Ultron. He will appear not only as the familiar metallic robot but also as a new human-looking version with a beard. This human form gives Ultron a more personal and unsettling presence.

Ultron’s role is also closely connected to Vision’s mind. As White Vision struggles with an existential crisis, his subconscious becomes a kind of mental landscape where characters from his past can appear. Ultron, along with J.A.R.V.I.S. and F.R.I.D.A.Y., exists within this inner world. Ultron may also have returned because parts of his original programming remain buried within Vision’s evolving system.

Their relationship is said to be central to the series. Rather than being simply a traditional villain, Ultron becomes a dark companion and manipulator who forces Vision to confront his past. He warns Vision not to become trapped by memories of Wanda, telling him that he is “a ghost haunting her footsteps.” Ultron also reveals that Tommy is alive in the real world, giving Vision a new mission: saving his son.
