After “Disclaimer”, acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron is putting together another series for Apple TV, under his overall deal with the streamer through his production house Esperanto Filmoj. Titled “Ascension”, the show is based on “Last Days”, a horror novel by Adam Nevill.
While Cuaron was involved as a director on all the episodes of “Disclaimer”, he will be involved only as a writer and executive producer on the series. Natalia Erika James and Christian White, who have worked together on “Apartment 7A” and “Relic”, are jointly handling showrunning duties and executive producing. The former is also signed on to be lead director.
BAFTA TV Award winner and five-time Golden Globe nominee Caitríona Balfe (“Outlander,” “Belfast”) is the confirmed lead cast member at the moment. She is also involved as a co-executive producer alongside Cuarón. Other executive producers include Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden for Anonymous Content.
The scripting is a collaborative effort from Natalia Erika James, Christian White, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón.
Per Apple TV’s official logline, the series will follow an hour-long episodic format. The story revolves around a “relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who is brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings — until she discovers something far more insidious beneath. ‘Ascension’ explores evil and innocence at the highest level, while asking how far we’ll go — and what we’ll sacrifice — to protect the ones we love, even when the greatest threat to them may be ourselves.”
“Ascension” also marks a reunion for Alfonso Cuarón, Anonymous Content and Apple TV after “Disclaimer.” Apple also reveals that “Ascension” is one of the two projects under the label featuring Balfe, who has also signed Apple Original Films’ “Tenzing.”
Meanwhile, Anonymous Content has also lined up two more Apple Originals, “Neuromancer” (based on William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel) and “12 12 12” (a heist series featuring Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie).
