Box Office: 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' and 'The Odyssey' revive the theatrical experience in a big way

The global box office is enjoying one of its strongest periods in recent years, thanks to the remarkable success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey". Together, the two films have earned an incredible $2.06 billion worldwide, drawing huge crowds to cinemas and proving that audiences are still eager to experience well-made massive spectacles on the big screen.

Leading the charge is "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", which has become a true box office phenomenon. In just six days, the Marvel blockbuster crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, making it the second-fastest film in history to achieve the milestone. By the end of its first week, the film had earned $1.155 billion globally.

The film’s earnings are split between $449.17 million from North America, accounting for 38.9% of its total revenue, and $706.30 million from international markets, which make up the remaining 61.1%.

The latest Spider-Man adventure has also broken several major records. It delivered the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, collecting $360.1 million and narrowly surpassing the previous record set by "Avengers: Endgame"  ($357.1 million). It also became the fastest movie to reach $400 million at the North American box office, doing so in only four days.

Daily earnings have been equally impressive. The film set new records for the highest-grossing Monday with $47 million and the highest-grossing Tuesday with $42 million in domestic box office history. Internationally, it achieved another milestone in India by earning Rs 72.44 crore ($7.6 million) on its opening day, making it the biggest Hollywood opening ever in the country, ahead of "Avengers: Endgame".

While "Spider-Man" has dominated headlines with its explosive start, Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey" has quietly built extraordinary momentum. The epic drama has earned around $930.9 million worldwide in just 20 days, putting it within touching distance of the $1 billion milestone. Importantly, the film has yet to open in major international markets such as China, Japan, and South Korea, meaning its global total is expected to grow significantly in the coming weeks.

So far, "The Odyssey" has collected $414.1 million in North America, representing 44.5% of its worldwide earnings, while international markets have contributed $516.8 million, or 55.5% of the total.

The film has also set several impressive records. It became the fastest movie of 2026 to reach $700 million globally, achieving the feat in just 12 days and outpacing other major releases such as "Toy Story 5" and "Michael". It has also delivered historic results for IMAX, helping the premium format record its "highest-grossing month ever", with $257 million in July. "The Odyssey" is the fastest film to cross $200 million in global IMAX ticket sales and the only movie to record multiple-weekend revenue of above $40 million from IMAX screens.

For Nolan, the film represents another career milestone. It earned $123.5 million in its opening weekend in North America, making it the director’s biggest opening for a non-superhero film, surpassing "Oppenheimer". It also overtook the entire domestic gross of "Oppenheimer" ($330 million) in just 13 days, cementing its place among the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time.

With one film already past the $1 billion mark and the other rapidly closing in, the global box office is experiencing an exceptional run. Their combined earnings of more than $2.06 billion have given cinemas around the world a major boost, highlighting the enduring appeal of event films and the power of strong theatrical releases.
