When Mammootty's name was announced for the 72nd National Film Awards, it was no surprise for those who watched his performance in Bramayugam. He shared the Best Actor award with Kartik Aryan, who won critical acclaim for his role in Chandu Champion.
Mammootty had previously won Best Actor award in 1990 for Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and Mathilukal; in 1994 for Vidheyan and Ponthan Mada; and in 1997 for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar (English).
Article 370 was named the Best Film while its lead actress Yami Gautam won the Best Actress. Shashwat Sachdev bagged Best Music Director award for the same film.
The 72nd edition awards announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting covers films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from January 1 to December 31, 2024. The 11-member jury was headed by veteran filmmaker Jayaraj.
Sanjay Mishra won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Bhakshak while Ropashree Varkady and Sachana Namidass won Best Supporting Actress award for their roles in Mithya and Maharaja respectively.

Singer Vaikom Vijayalakshmi won the Best Playback Singer award for singing Angu Vaana Konilu from the 2024 Malayalam action fantasy ARM (Ajayante Randam Moshanam) starring Tovino Thomas. It was composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas and written by Manu Manjith. The award was shared with Abhay Jodhpurkar who sang Gharat Ganpati in Navsachi Gauri Mazi.
Venky Atluri won the Best Screenplay award for the Dulquer Salmaan starrer Lucky Bhaskar. Shehnad Jalal won Best Cinematography for Bramayugam. Anl Arasu claimed Best Action Direction award for Maharaja.
Rajkummar Rao starrer Srikanth claimed the Best Hindi Movie title while Dhanush starrer Raayan won Best Tamil Movie and Feminichi Fathima clinched the Best Malayalam Movie. Mithya was the Best Kannada Film while Committee Kurrollu bagged the Best Telugu title.
