"Drishyam 3" has completed a successful 25 days in theatres, emerging as one of Mohanlal's biggest hits, and his second-highest worldwide grosser after "L2: Empuraan". Its lifetime gross currently stands at Rs 238.61 crore, making it the 4th highest-grossing Malayalam film, behind "Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra" (est. Rs 300 crore+), "L2: Empuraan" (est. Rs 250 crore+), and "Manjummel Boys" (est. Rs 241 crore+).
Directed and written by Jeethu Joseph, who also directed the first two "Drishyam" movies, the third part reached the 4th position after surpassing the lifetime collections of Mohanlal's previous blockbuster "Thudarum" (est. Rs 235.38 crore) and the most recent industry hit "Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros" (est. Rs 238.46 crore).
"Drishyam 3" is almost on the verge of concluding its theatrical run ahead of its digital streaming premiere on June 18 (Prime Video). So the chances of it beating "Manjummel Boys" remain doubtful. According to some trade analysts, the expectations on "Drishyam 3" were higher; however, given some of the mixed responses, unlike the nearly unanimous positive reception for "Drishyam 2", seem to have affected the overall box office haul of the third entry.
But despite this, “Drishyam 3”, which saw Meena, Esther Anil, and Hansiba reprising their original roles, leveraged pre-established franchise hype and generated massive front-loaded, fast-paced revenue, helping the movie collect Rs 100 crore in just 3 days and cross the Rs 200 crore milestone in 10 days.
"Drishyam 3" was also helped by the massive revenue from international markets. The overseas gross accounts for Rs 111.70 crore of its total revenue, effectively balancing out its domestic deceleration and allowing it to bypass "Thudarum" and "Vaazha 2".
Interestingly, "Thudarum" remains the stronger performer in India (in net and gross), picking up nearly Rs 15 crore more in domestic net earnings than "Drishyam 3". Below are the net and gross comparison figures.
India Net Collection (estimates)
Drishyam 3 - Rs 109.46 crore
Thudarum - Rs 122.00 crore
India Gross collection (estimates)
Drishyam 3 - Rs 126.91 crore
Thudarum - Rs 141.58 crore
