After two filmmakers dropped out, Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2017 novel "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" has finally landed on a third director. Actress Anna Kendrick, who made her directorial debut with "Woman of the Hour", is set to helm.
Previous directing candidates included Maggie Betts and Leslye Headland, who had left for unexplained reasons.
Liz Tigelaar ("Little Fires Everywhere", "Casual") penned the script based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s New York Times bestseller, which chronicles a fictional interview between a journalist and an ageing Hollywood actress named Evelyn Hugo, who opens up on the various scandals that plagued her and her seven marriages — the mystery behind them all and the shocking, uncomfortable truths about many individuals.
This marks the second collaboration between Netflix and Anna Kendrick after "Woman of the Hour", which was released on the platform in 2024. That movie saw Kendrick playing a contestant who runs into the 'Dating Game Killer', while appearing on the television show The Dating Game in 1978, against the backdrop of his horrifying murder spree.
Netflix revealed that script revisions have been made by Francesca Sloane ("Mr. & Mrs Smith", "Atlanta", "Fargo". Reid, whose "Daisy Jones & the Six" was also recently turned into a series, is involved as an executive producer.
Liza Chasin will produce for 3dot Productions in association with Brad Mendelsohn for Circle Management + Productions ("Daisy Jones & The Six") and David Hinojosa ("Babygirl", "Past Lives").
Casting details have not been confirmed yet.
