"Karuppu" has recorded an exceptional opening weekend, collecting Rs 120.75 crore worldwide in just three days. This milestone represents a major box office triumph for Suriya, positioning the movie ahead of his previous career-best records and cementing it alongside the elite Tamil blockbusters of the last two years.
Within just three days of release, Karuppu has officially beaten the entire lifetime worldwide collections of Suriya's biggest post-pandemic releases: "Kanguva" and "Retro". It's expected to beat "Singam 2" on the first Monday (Day 4) to become Suriya's highest-grossing film of all time.
The 120 crore worldwide gross was registered after the RJ Balaji directorial collected Rs 28.35 crore on the third day (a 17.4% surge from the Day 2 collection), taking the cumulative India collection to Rs 78.75 crore and total net earnings to Rs 68.00 crore, along with the total overseas gross of Rs 42 crore.
Despite mixed reviews from some critics, it's evident that "Karuppu" has something that appeals to mass audiences, especially from the B and C centres, who have been waiting for an unabashedly entertaining, over-the-top masala entertainer that keeps things light. Some netizens have brought up examples of overly serious recent attempts from actors like Dhanush and Sivakarthikeyan, which didn't work for them because they focused too much on grim subjects and recycled themes centred on familiar social issues.
On the other hand, "Karuppu" has apparently gone for a relatively more escapist approach, which seems to have clicked big time with the majority of the audiences, aside from, of course, giving many Suriya fans what they wanted from him in a long time.
