Box Office Report: Dhanush's 'Kara' takes a big drop in domestic collection on first Monday, nears Rs 40 crore worldwide

The Tamil Nadu Assembly election results and Vijay's win could also have been a majorly distracting factor for the Tamil-speaking audiences. It's also concerning given the reported Rs 100 crore budget

It's not looking good for Dhanush's latest release "Kara" at the box office as the film failed to ace the crucial first Monday test. On the same day, that is the fifth day since its release on April 30, the film took a 64% drop, earning only Rs 1.80 crore, compared to the Rs 5 crore it earned on Sunday. Box office figures tracked by Sacnilk showed that the film registered only a 16.3 % occupancy on the first Monday.

In terms of domestic net earnings, "Kara" collected Rs 25.15 crore; in terms of domestic gross, Rs 29.05 crore. Along with the cumulative Rs 9.65 from overseas screens so far, the film's current worldwide total stands at Rs 38.70 crore.

This performance is quite dismal considering the film's reported budget of Rs 100 crore. Had it been a smaller-budget film,  this performance wouldn't have been such a concern. But since Dhanush's recent movies all opened well and did good to strong business overall, the performance of "Kara" in the first four days is not encouraging. In fact, it lags behind all his recent releases, including "Idli Kadai".

The weak Monday performance could also be due to the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results announced on the same day. Some reports noted that the high public interest in the political shift — specifically the rise of Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK party — diverted audience attention away from theatres.

Some reports have noted that "Kara" is moving almost at the same pace as Sivakarthikeyan's "Parasakthi". The Dhanush movie, directed by Vignesh Raja, earned slightly more than the Sudha Kongara period thriller, in its extended opening weekend (Rs 22.6 crore).
