It was recently revealed that Prime Video is bringing Vishal Bhardwaj's Shahid Kapoor-starrer "O'Romeo" to streaming. However, the makers are not bringing it directly to the subscription-based format yet. It will first become available on rental, on March 27, followed by the regular streaming in April.
This approach is similar to the arrangement that Prime Video had with Anurag Kashyap, with his two-part crime saga "Nishaanchi". The first part was first released on a rental basis and later for the regular subscribers. However, the second part was released directly to subscribers.
"O'Romeo" has Tripti Dimri as the female lead, and is a romance-based gangster drama, in which she plays a woman looking to hire a contract killer to avenge the murder of her husband. After she ends up at the door of Shahid's character, things take a complicated turn.
Other lead cast members include Nana Patekar, Farida Jalal, Tamannaah Bhatia, Avinash Tiwary, and Vikrant Massey.
Released theatrically on February 13, "O'Romeo" marks the fourth collaboration between Shahid and Bhardwaj. They have previously worked together on "Kaminey", "Haider", and "Rangoon".
The film was met with mixed reviews upon release. In its review, THE WEEK wrote that the film is "delicious on paper" but suffers from a thin plot, adding that while Shahid Kapoor is "terrific" as the main character Ustara, the film "never quite interrogates the ‘why’ behind the intensity of his love for Afsha. His leap from a bloodthirsty assassin to besotted 'Romeo' feels abrupt, and the transformation, though passionately performed, doesn’t fully land."
