At last! Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson made Oscar history by winning his first Directing Oscar for 'One Battle After Another'.

An acclaimed American filmmaker known for his richly detailed, character-driven storytelling and distinctive visual style, Anderson has always been looked at as the prime contender many times, but never won once, despite being nominated several times, until now.

He made his debut in 1996 with "Hard Eight", announcing himself as a force to be reckoned with, through the quietly powerful crime drama exploring loneliness and human connection. The film also demonstrated his talent for extracting subtle and naturalistic performances out of his actors, and careful pacing. The skill was showcased in a much stronger way in his subsequent films "Boogie Nights", "Magnolia", "Punch-Drunk Love", "There Will be Blood", and others.

He was expected to win for "There Will be Blood", starring Daniel Day-Lewis, in 2008's Oscars. Many felt he was snubbed. That year, Martin Scorsese took home the Best Directing trophy.
