The Delhi High Court on Thursday reprimanded actor Rajpal Yadav for reopening his cheque bounce case and pointed out that he is in jail because he failed to "honour his commitment".

The actor is known for movies like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Waqt, Phir Hera Pheri, Partner, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama and Chup Chup Ke. He now has to stay in the Tihar Jail for four more days as his bail hearing has been postponed to Monday.

"You did not go to jail because the Court passed an order. You have gone to jail because you have failed to comply with your own commitments to the Court. You were not giving the money because the Court asked you to, you were giving the money because you entered into a settlement," said Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.

Yadav's lawyer said he was misguided about the proceedings. To this, the court said he was not misguided as he has appeared before it at least 25 to 30 times previously.

The case is regarding Rs 5 crore borrowed by Yadav from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd for his debut directorial film, Ata Pata Laapata, in 2010. However, it was a box office flop.

The high court on February 2 asked Yadav to surrender within two days at the Tihar Jail over failed payments, following which the actor surrendered on February 5.

He was sentenced to six months in jail by a sessions court in 2024 but the conviction was overturned by the high court after Yadav assured that he was willing to settle the issue with the production company. However, he had failed to settle the dispute, prompting the court to seek his surrender.

In it judgement, the Delhi High Court said Yadav should pay Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases against him. This makes the total payable amount Rs 9.45 crore.
