After the tremendous box-office success of Border 2, actor Sunny Deol is gearing up for the release of Lahore 1947. Starring Preity Zinta as the female lead, and directed by veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under his banner Aamir Khan Productions, the historical epic has a confirmed release window: August 13, 2026 (Independence Day week).
Lahore 1947 marks a reunion between Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol after their iconic past collaborations, such as Damini and Ghayal. It may be recalled that Ghayal marked Santoshi's directorial debut.
Sunny Deol's other co-stars in Lahore 1947 include Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Mithun Chakraborty, Abhimanyu Singh, and Karan Deol in key roles. AR Rahman is composing the score from lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
Veteran award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan ("Roja", "Dil Se") handles the camera while Shyam Salgaonkar is assigned editing duties, with Resul Pookutty handling sound design, and Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray in charge of production design.
Lahore 1947 has a story by Dr Asghar Wajahat, who co-wrote the dialogues with Santoshi. The latter wrote the screenplay based on Wajahat's play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.
The play was set in Lahore, Pakistan, shortly after the 1947 Partition of India, amidst the backdrop of the refugee crisis and inter-communal violence. Sunny Deol is said to be playing Sikander Mirza, who, along with his family, flees Lucknow and seeks refuge in Lahore in a home that once belonged to a Punjabi Hindu family. However, complications ensue in the form of characters both good-hearted and extremist.
