Official announcement: Mohanlal to play Prithviraj's grandfather in 'Khalifa'

The producers of 'Khalifa' have managed a sensational coup by bringing in Mohanlal for a crucial cameo in this Prithviraj starrer

Mohanlal and Prithviraj were last seen together in the 2025 release 'Empuraan'

It is raining cameos in Indian cinema and most big-budget action films have seen crucial cameos from superstars, either in the same industry or from other languages. Khalifa is one of the most awaited Malayalam films of 2026 and this Prithviraj starrer now has a huge upgrade with Mohanlal stepping into the project.

On Saturday (December 6), the producers of Khalifa made an official announcement regarding the veteran superstar's entry into the film. Mohanlal will be playing the role of Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, a dreaded mafia don who is grandfather to Prithvirak's Aamir Ali. The gangster drama is set in the backdrop of gold and other forms of smuggling, with inspirations drawn from real life characters.

This will be Mohanlal's fourth on-screen association with Prithviraj after Lucifer, Bro Daddy and Empuraan. It will also be Mohanlal's third film under director Vysakh after Pulimurugan and Monster. The duo was supposed to combine for a big budget film after Monster but that film's underwhelming response saw a delay in proceedings.

The first official promo of Khalifa was aired during Prithviraj's birthday and saw immense reception on social media. It is after a long gap that the actor will be seen in an out-and-out action drama made on a grand scale. Already, Khalifa was high on hype and Mohanlal's addition has only furthered the expectations around the film.

Khalifa has Vidyut Jammwal and Krithi Shetty in key roles with the script from Jinu Abraham. The music department is being handled by Jakes Bejoy who has also done the background score for the film.
