Vikramaditya Motwane's series Black Warrant will get a second season, as per Netflix. The new season will see Zahan Kapoor reprising his role as ASP Sunil Gupta. The series is based on the book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, penned by ex-Tihar superintendent Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury.

The series, which premiered on January 10, dramatises Gupta's past experiences, and those of his colleagues, in Tihar dealing with its notorious inmates and the complex politics involved in the events. The streaming date of the new season is yet to be announced.

The streamer shared the Season 2 poster on their social media handles with the caption: "Welcome to Season 2, Jailer sahab. Black Warrant Season 2 is coming soon, only on Netflix."

In its review of the series, THE WEEK wrote that "Motwane and his team deserve massive applause for creating a coherent, meticulously crafted show that looks at every element that defines its principal characters and those around them. Black Warrant is one of the finest crime series in the Indian OTT space that sits comfortably alongside other shows of its ilk like Paatal Lok and Kohrra."

Also starring Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, and Sidhant Gupta (as  Charles Sobhraj), Black Warrant was co-created by Motwane and Satyanshu Singh.

Motwane recently cited David Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter as one of its minor influences, in an earlier interview with PTI. To achieve a sense of verisimilitude, Motwane gathered insights from Gupta aside from visiting Tihar jail to study the functioning of its authorities and inmates.

"There is something voyeuristic about looking at a jail," he says. "00.01 per cent of the population of 99.99 per cent will never go inside the jail but there's an intrigue about what happens inside. What are the people like? Are they all criminals? Are there any silver linings?"

The Udaan filmmaker added that he thought it would be interesting to make Gupta as a guide for the audience. "The lens was always about Sunil's story and if he is the centre of the wheel, the focus is on the spokes that are going to go around, him and his colleagues, family and the relationship with prisoners."
