Glamour and glitz: What to expect from Met Gala 2025

Celebrating Black fashion’s rich legacy, the Met Gala 2025 honours dandyism, identity, and cultural brilliance through bold couture

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Met Gala is around the corner, and this year’s event promises to be just as exciting and fashionable as ever. The gala, scheduled to take place on May 5, 2025, will showcase the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The year’s event will be a tribute to the artistry and cultural legacy of Black fashion. Taking place on the first Monday of May, it also marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.

Theme and exhibition

This year’s Met Gala draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Anna Wintour, fashion mogul and the editor-in-chief of Vogue, along with Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Anna Wintour Costume Centre at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, have designed the exhibition in that will trace the history of Black dandyism from the 18th century to the present day. Miller will also guest curate the show.

The co-chairs of this year’s event include actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, and Men's Creative Director at Louis Vuitton and musician Pharrell Williams. Basketball player LeBron James has been named honorary co-chair.

The gala was—and will always be—a star-studded event, and though the official guest list has been kept under wraps, it is rumoured that this years red carpet will be graced by the likes of Zendaya, Simone Biles, Doechii, Madonna, Shakira and many more. Also in the rumour mill are Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh, and Isha Ambani.

The Met Gala 2025 will be fashion’s biggest night-out event of the year, with guests expected to interpret the theme of black dandyism through their fashion choices. Indian designer Gaurav Gupta will be dressing Advani for her debut, while Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be designing Khan’s custom outfit.

The Met Gala will take place on May 5, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style will run from May 10, 2025, to October 26, 2025.
