The actor was egged by a reporter to speak about the Kashmir issue during an event. She, however, refused to speak, saying “mana kar diya hai”. Hayat faced backlash over her comment after the video was allegedly leaked online, with many calling her 'inconsiderate'.
The actor has now come up with with an explanation for her comment. Claiming that she has been fairly vocal on the Kashmir issue, she said she is planning to take it up in a major way. She added that the leaked video was taken out of context. Hayat said it was a charity event and the PR had requested her not to make it political.
"The leaked video is being taken out of context. I’ve been the most vocal on #Kashmir issue globally & will continue to do so. I have big plans for next steps. This was a charity event & was requested by the PR not to be political ¬ distract from the orphans I was there to help," she tweeted.
Earlier, she had taken on Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra, who, when called out on her an anti-Pakistan tweet, had said, "Whenever you're done venting. Got it, done? Okay cool." Hayat said Celebrities who act as charity spokespersons need to always focus on humanitarianism, and added that as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Chopra should not have been using the forum to "legitimise a regime opposed to the values she claims to represent."
