Emmy: Bill Hader wins best comedy actor for Barry; Chernobyl earns plaudits

The ceremony is hostless, like this year's Oscars

Former Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Bill Hader won the Emmy Awards for the best comedy actor for his performance in the series Barry, which is the tale of a hitman who falls in love with theatre. HBO's Chernobyl reeled in three awards: one for best direction, another for outstanding writing, and one for best limited series. Phoebe Waller-Bridge won the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her performance in Fleabag, an upset considering Julia Louis-Dreyfus was expected to win it for Veep.

Game of Thrones has received a record 32 nominations, with Peter Dinklage winning the outstanding supporting actor in a drama series award for his role of Tyrion Lannister. Game of Thrones won the award for outstanding drama series, and Fleabag won for outstanding comedy series. Jodie Comer was adjudged the outstanding lead actress in a drama series, for her role in Killing Eve. HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver  won for outstanding writing in variety series, and Saturday Night Live (SNL) won the outstanding variety sketch series award.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch won the award for outstanding television movie, while Ozark's Jason Bateman won for outstanding directing for a drama series.

Singer Halsey lent her voice to this year's "In Memoriam" tribute at the 71st Primetime Emmys awards ceremony. The 'Without Me' hitmaker delivered a simpler performance of a classic song during the 2019 show. Comic Thomas Lennon was on the off-camera commentary duties during the ceremony for audiences at home while the winners head to the stage to accept their awards. While the ceremony will hostless, like this year's Oscars, actor Adam Devine introduced the variety genre with a special performance created by Nappytabs' Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo.
