Prithviraj on Sabarimala row: Follow traditions of the shrine

Actor Prithviraj has made his stand clear on the Sabarimala issue. In an interview to Vanitha, a woman's magazine, Prithviraj opened up on the Sabarimala row. This was the actor's first public reaction on the issue of entry of young women to the Ayyappa Temple in the hills.

What Prithviraj said: I am losing my belief in Gods and idols as years pass. Now, I don’t believe in religion. But I feel that there is higher power that controls everything in the universe. As I had developed the habit of praying at temples during childhood, I continue to do that. At home, we have a prayer room where I spend some time. I also visit some churches. But I feel sad witnessing the present controversies over devotion. My stand is that each person should be firm in his or her belief. If you worship Satan, stick to that belief. But if it is offering prayers at temples that you prefer, follow the traditions connected with that shrine. Otherwise, do not create problems.

I can give my opinion on the Sabarimala issue if I am enlightened on whether the young women who offered prayers there were really devotees of Lord Ayyappa. If somebody feels like visiting the Ayyappa temple as part of a trek through the forest, I wish to remind them that there are many other temples for the purpose. Why don’t you leave Sabarimala alone? Why are you causing inconvenience to so many people?
