Singer Sona Mohapatra has filed a complaint with the Mumabi police against alleged threats from the members of Madariya Sufi Foundation who were offended by the video of her song Tori Surat.
In a series of tweets, Sona Mohapatra on Monday, said that she has received a 'threatening notice' from the foundation to remove her music video from all communication channels. She also said that the foundation felt that the video is vulgar, and will flare communal tensions. Th song is part of her latest music album Lal Pari Mastani. A Sufi love song, Tori Surat was penned by Ameer Khusrau.
In her tweets to the Munbai police, Sona Mohapatra added that the foundation had called her a repeated offender and objected to a five-year old video of hers on Coke studio as well as it felt the video insulted Islam because she was ‘dressed exposing her body’ and playing westernised music.
She told The Hindu, "I have been getting the same email twice a day, and the foundation has objected to the song being performed by a woman wearing a sleeveless dress, which I find ridiculous. Since their email claims that they have also written to the police, I have submitted a detailed response to the police."
Lyricist Javed Akhtar tweeted in support of Sona Mohapatra and strongly condemned 'regressive and reactionary organisations'.
