What makes Cambrian Patrol challenging?
Exercise Cambrian Patrol is the British Army's premier military patrolling event, held annually in Wales and hosted by Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade. The exercise is designed to enhance operational capabilities by subjecting participating teams to highly demanding military tasks and assessments.
It is open to regular and reserve personnel from all three British armed services, as well as military units from other countries.
The assessment begins as soon as teams reach the designated drop-off point and continues until they complete the exercise.
Participants can be evaluated across a range of military skills, including tactical conduct, navigation, fieldcraft, leadership, physical and mental resilience, and reconnaissance of enemy positions.
Other assessment areas include artillery target procedures, emergency close air support, battlefield casualty drills, countering explosive ordnance threats and responding to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
Teams could also be tested on dismounted close combat, obstacle crossing, patrol reporting, radio communications, operational law and ethical behaviour, according to the UK Army website.
The exercise also assesses the ability to identify friendly and enemy aircraft, vehicles, weapons and equipment, alongside skills in media handling, civil engagement and partner-force assistance, making it a demanding test of the operational preparedness of the participating teams.
