Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), on Saturday, showcased its indigenously designed and developed Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) in a social media post, highlighting the three-tonne platform's ability to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces across some of the country's most challenging terrains.

“Built for India. Ready for the world,” HAL said in a tweet while showcasing the helicopter, which has been designed to operate in environments ranging from the scorching deserts to the icy Himalayas and remote and demanding operational zones.

The LUH is a three-tonne-class, single-engine, multi-purpose helicopter conceived, designed and developed indigenously by HAL to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.

According to HAL, the helicopter represents more than the development of a new platform and reflects India's progress in indigenous technology, testing, aerospace capabilities and the development of a domestic ecosystem.

HAL, in a video that was posted along with the tweet, said the LUH brings together modern technologies in a compact and agile platform.

Its composite airframe and rotor blades provide strength while reducing weight, while its hingeless rotor system provides agility and manoeuvrability. These features make the helicopter suitable for operations in narrow and confined valleys.

The helicopter also features a modern glass cockpit and advanced avionics that provide pilots with critical flight and system information.

Designed as a versatile, multi-role platform, the LUH can undertake a range of missions, including utility operations, reconnaissance and surveillance, casualty evacuation and troop movement.

The helicopter was indigenously designed and developed by HAL's Rotary Wing Research and Design Centre, with features intended to meet the diverse operating conditions unique to India.

The LUH is intended to replace the ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters operated by the Services.

The helicopter is powered by a single Ardiden 1U turboshaft engine from Safran Helicopter Engines of France. According to HAL, the engine provides adequate power margins to enable the helicopter to undertake high-altitude missions in the Himalayas.

The LUH is also equipped with a Smart Cockpit Display System, or glass cockpit, and a state-of-the-art Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS). It has been designed for various utility and armed roles.

HAL said its latest showcase is the beginning of a series focusing on the LUH, covering the helicopter's journey, capabilities, technologies and the milestones that shaped its development.
