India's move to procure the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system has taken another definite step as Tata Advanced Systems Limited and the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) signed a memorandum of understanding for the co-production of Javelin missiles in India.
The Javelin is an advanced, medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile system, designed to engage a range of targets, including armoured vehicles and fortified positions. The system is used by the US Army, US Marine Corps and several international customers.
The signing of the MoU comes just days after India sealed a deal with the US to procure Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems to strengthen the Indian Army's combat capabilities.
The Javelin Joint Venture, a partnership between Raytheon, an RTX business, and Lockheed Martin, has selected Tata Advanced Systems as its prime partner for future co-production efforts in India.
The MOU covers the proposed co-production of the Javelin All Up Round (AUR) in India. An AUR is a fully assembled and ready-to-use missile package containing all the components required for deployment and firing.
Under the MOU, Tata Advanced Systems and JJV will explore setting up a final assembly and integration facility for the Javelin AUR in India. The two sides will also explore establishing capabilities to manufacture components in the country.
According to a statement from the Javelin Joint Venture, Tata Advanced Systems was selected after several companies were evaluated based on their capabilities and expertise. The agreement is expected to support future production of the Javelin system while creating opportunities for Indian industry.
The arrangement would also establish a production chain connecting facilities in the US with final assembly and integration in India. Under the proposed co-production effort, Lockheed Martin's facility in Troy, Alabama, would produce sub-assembly kits through multiyear production. Raytheon's facility in Tucson, Arizona, would manufacture guidance electronics units.
These sub-assembly kits and guidance electronics units would then be shipped to India for final assembly and integration.
The companies said the arrangement would help create and develop a defence workforce in India while sustaining jobs within the US domestic supply chain.
Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD, TASL, pointed out that the initiative brings critical assembly expertise and knowledge transfer into India’s defence industrial ecosystem, while strengthening self-reliance. "Local assembly of the Javelin All Up Round will enhance operational readiness and ensure timely access to proven, combat-ready capability for the Indian armed forces," he added.
Rich Liccion, vice-president, JJV and program director, Lockheed Martin Javelin, said partnering with TASL to establish a dedicated Javelin final assembly and integration facility in India is a pivotal step in ensuring a resilient supply chain for this critical anti-tank weapon system.
