India is entering an important phase in its aerospace journey. A combination of technological innovation, a growing domestic defence industry and an expanding start-up ecosystem is creating an environment where capabilities once developed primarily for strategic applications are increasingly finding commercial and civilian uses.

Drones are at the centre of this transformation.

The real opportunity, however, is larger than manufacturing more unmanned aircraft. It lies in building dual-use technologies—systems, components and software that can serve both defence and civilian markets. Surveillance, infrastructure inspection, logistics, disaster response and military operations increasingly depend on the same underlying capabilities: autonomy, advanced sensors, secure communications, navigation, propulsion, avionics and artificial intelligence.

This convergence could become one of the defining features of India's aerospace growth story over the next decade.

Defence is becoming an innovation engine

India's changing defence landscape is providing a powerful catalyst for this ecosystem. The government's increasing emphasis on indigenous capability is opening pathways for start-ups and private companies to participate not only in technology development, but also in procurement.

The iDEX ecosystem illustrates this transition. In February 2026, the Ministry of Defence stated that approximately 676 start-ups, MSMEs and individual innovators had been engaged through iDEX, with 58 prototypes receiving procurement clearance worth around ₹3,853 crore. The government also reported 45 procurement contracts worth nearly ₹2,326 crore.

The significance of these numbers goes beyond the funding itself. They demonstrate a gradual movement from innovation support to product adoption.

For the drone industry, defence provides a demanding environment in which technologies such as autonomous navigation, secure communications, EO/IR sensing, mission computers, propulsion and AI-enabled decision support can be developed and validated against real operational requirements.

Once mature, many of these technologies can move into civilian markets.

That is the power of the dual-use model: defence can accelerate technology development, while civilian markets can expand volumes and commercial scale.

Policy is creating the foundation for scale

India's policy environment has also evolved significantly around drones and indigenous manufacturing.

The Drone Rules, 2021 simplified the regulatory framework for drone operations, while the government's PLI scheme for drones and drone components was introduced to encourage domestic manufacturing. India subsequently prohibited the import of foreign drones while keeping the import of drone components open, reinforcing the objective of developing domestic capabilities across the value chain.

Defence procurement provides an additional demand driver.

For FY2026–27, the Union Budget has allocated substantial resources to defence, with a strong emphasis on domestic procurement. This creates an important market opportunity for Indian companies developing sophisticated unmanned systems, subsystems and enabling technologies.

The broader significance is that India is beginning to develop several ingredients required for aerospace companies to scale: domestic demand, technology-development programmes, manufacturing capability and an increasingly supportive policy environment.

The opportunity is therefore not simply to build Indian drones for the Indian market. It is to use India as a development and validation base for products that can ultimately compete internationally.

The bigger opportunity is the technology stack

The next generation of the drone industry will not be defined only by airframes.

The higher-value opportunity lies across the technology stack: propulsion, flight-control systems, avionics, sensors, communications, navigation, AI, autonomy, payloads, power systems and mission-control software.

This distinction matters.

An airframe can become a relatively competitive manufacturing product, but a proprietary propulsion system, autonomous navigation stack, imaging payload or secure communication architecture can become a technology platform with applications across multiple aircraft and industries.

Autonomy is likely to be particularly transformative. As drones move from remotely piloted platforms toward increasingly autonomous systems, technologies for perception, obstacle avoidance, navigation, collaborative operation and AI-assisted mission management will become increasingly important.

The same capabilities can support applications ranging from agricultural operations and infrastructure inspection to logistics, emergency response and defence.

Counter-UAS will create another technology layer

The growth of unmanned systems will also create a parallel requirement: protecting critical infrastructure and operational environments from hostile or unauthorised drones.

Counter-UAS technology is therefore likely to become an important part of India's aerospace and security ecosystem. Detection, identification, tracking and response require the integration of radar, RF sensing, electro-optics, artificial intelligence and command-and-control systems.

This creates opportunities beyond the drone itself.

Companies can build value by specialising in individual layers of the ecosystem—sensors, autonomy, communications, propulsion, electronic systems, software or counter-UAS—while integrating with larger system providers.

That is how a broad aerospace ecosystem can emerge rather than a market dominated only by complete-platform manufacturers.

From an Indian market to a global footprint

India's engineering talent, software capabilities, cost-efficient product development and expanding private aerospace sector provide a strong foundation for global competitiveness.

But India's advantage should not be based simply on producing systems more cheaply.

The next generation of international customers will increasingly demand systems that are reliable, secure, maintainable and capable of operating in difficult environments.

India has a natural opportunity here. Technologies developed for India's varied operating conditions—including high temperatures, difficult terrain, long operating distances and demanding defence requirements—can potentially be adapted for markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and other emerging regions.

A dual-use strategy therefore gives Indian aerospace companies multiple routes to scale: defence procurement, civilian applications and exports.

Building the ecosystem for the next decade

The next phase of India's drone journey will require investment beyond platforms.

Testing infrastructure, certification, airspace integration, cybersecurity, reliable supply chains and common technical standards will become increasingly important as autonomous systems move into more complex operating environments.

Most importantly, India needs companies that can move beyond assembling aircraft to owning critical technologies.

The opportunity over the next decade is therefore much bigger than creating a large domestic drone-manufacturing industry. It is to build Indian technology companies that own capabilities across propulsion, autonomy, sensing, avionics, communications and mission systems—and then apply those capabilities across defence and civilian markets.

The winners of India's aerospace growth story may not necessarily be the companies that build the most drones. They may be the companies that develop the technologies that make thousands of different drones—and autonomous systems—smarter, safer, more capable and more affordable.

That is the real promise of India's dual-use aerospace opportunity.
