Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, on Friday, launched Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel, an indigenously developed specialised fuel designed to keep military vehicles operational in extreme cold, particularly in high-altitude and snow-bound regions.

XWG has been jointly developed by the Indian Army and oil marketing companies. According to the the defence ministry, this fuel will enhance the mobility, safety and operational availability of combat and logistics vehicles in harsh climatic conditions. The technology also has potential civilian applications in high-altitude and severe winter regions.

Unlike conventional diesel, which can thicken and clog fuel filters at very low temperatures, affecting the operation of vehicles in high-altitude areas, XWG Diesel remains effective at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius.

The fuel complies with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications, allowing it to be used in the Indian Army's existing fleet without any engine modification or re-homologation.

What are its benefits?

According to the defence ministry release, XWG Diesel will improve the mobility, operational readiness and mission reliability of military vehicles deployed in extreme weather conditions.

General Dhiraj Seth described it as a game-changing indigenous innovation, saying it would eliminate practices that were required to keep vehicles functional during severe winters earlier, improving the safety and morale of troops. He also praised the Indian Army and the oil marketing companies for developing the fuel within a year.

Recalling his own experience, the Army chief said two decades of his service "revolved around diesel", tracking fuel levels and calculating the cruising range of armoured vehicles. He said the new fuel would provide a significant operational advantage to both armoured vehicles, such as tanks, and transport vehicles operating along the northern borders, reported news agency ANI.

According to him, the fuel's ability to withstand a wide range of temperatures, with a pour point of minus 42 degrees Celsius and a flash point of around 50 degrees Celsius, would have a far-reaching impact on Army operations across different terrains.

“Beyond its military applications, the technology will also benefit the civilian users in high-altitude and extreme winter regions by improving the reliability and safety of vehicles and equipment operating under severe climatic conditions,” the defence ministry stated.
