India and the United Kingdom are actively pursuing a strengthened defense partnership, as evidenced by the 15th India-UK Executive Steering Group (ESG) meeting held from June 17-19 in the UK, which established a roadmap for deeper military cooperation. Discussions focused on enhancing interoperability, joint exercises, training programs, and exchanges in emerging military technologies between the Indian and British Armies, alongside exploring new avenues for training collaboration and engagement between defense think tanks. This engagement, which included visits to UK military facilities and defense companies by the Indian delegation, signifies a growing mutual commitment to expanding strategic ties, building upon recent progress in trade and a defense industrial roadmap, with the aim of creating a future-oriented and mutually beneficial partnership.

India and the UK are looking to further strengthen defence partnership. During a key bilateral meeting held in the UK, the two sides came up with a roadmap for deeper military cooperation.

The 15th India-United Kingdom Executive Steering Group (ESG) meeting, held from June 17 to 19, focused on expanding collaboration between the Indian Army and the British Army across a range of areas, including joint exercises, training and emerging military technologies.

According to the Indian Army, the discussions centred on advancing multi-tiered military cooperation through enhanced interoperability, bilateral joint exercises, training programmes and exchanges between subject matter experts in niche and emerging military technologies.

The two sides also explored new avenues for training collaboration and discussed increasing engagement between defence think tanks.

As part of the visit, the Indian delegation toured the UK Trials & Experimental Group, attended the ESG meeting at the Ministry of Defence in London and visited MBDA in Stevenage.

The Indian Army described the deliberations as "constructive and forward-looking", saying they helped chart a "robust roadmap" for deepening defence cooperation and strengthening the enduring partnership between the armies of the two countries.

The latest engagement comes amid broader efforts by India and UK to expand strategic ties.

Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India and the UK were well-positioned to build a new future-oriented and mutually beneficial partnership, supported by the recently concluded comprehensive trade deal and the defence industrial roadmap.

The ESG meeting is the latest indication of the growing focus by both countries on enhancing defence cooperation through greater military engagement, technology exchanges and institutional collaboration.
