The Indian Air Force successfully conducted operations involving a C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft at the strategically vital Chinyalisaur airstrip in Uttarakhand, a location close to the Chinese border, as part of an ongoing four-day tactical drill delayed by a day due to adverse weather. The heavy-lift aircraft made two landings and take-offs from the Advanced Landing Ground (ALG), demonstrating its capability by unloading and reloading a vehicle, with further IAF aircraft expected to participate in the exercise. This event underscores the airstrip's importance for military air operations in the frontier region and its proven utility in supporting critical missions, including the transportation of heavy equipment for the Silkyara tunnel rescue operation in November 2023.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the Chinyalisaur airstrip in Uttarakhand's frontier Uttarkashi district, close to the China border, an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft carried out two successful landings and take-off operations at the airstrip on Friday.

According to a PTI report, the heavy-lift aircraft flew in from the Agra airbase as part of an ongoing Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) exercise. During the operation, the aircraft landed at the airstrip, unloaded and reloaded a vehicle, and then took off before repeating the exercise.

Quoting sources, the PTI report said the activity forms part of a four-day tactical drill being conducted by the IAF. The exercise was originally scheduled to begin on June 4 but was delayed by a day due to adverse weather conditions in the high-altitude region.

Sources said additional IAF aircraft are expected to participate in the exercise over the coming days.

The Chinyalisaur airstrip holds particular significance for the Air Force because of its location in Uttarkashi district, close to the border with China. The IAF uses the facility as an Advanced Landing Ground and has successfully operated several types of aircraft from the airstrip in the past.

The latest Hercules operations once again demonstrated the utility of the airstrip in supporting military air operations in the strategically important region.

The airstrip has also proven its value during emergencies. In November 2023, it played a key role during the Silkyara tunnel rescue mission, when a Super Hercules aircraft transported heavy auger drilling equipment in parts to support the rescue effort.
