Indian Air Force to showcase air dominance with 'Sindoor' formation in Republic Day spectacle

Republic Day flypast will feature 'Sindoor' formation, named to commemorate the successful tri-services military campaign, Operation Sindoor

A formation flying named after Operation Sindoor, comprising Rafale, Su-30, Jaguar and MiG-29 fighter jets, will be part of the Indian Air Force's Republic Day flypast.

According to officials, the flypast will also carry the flag of Operation Sindoor to commemorate India's high-precision tri-services military campaign against Pakistan from May 7 to 10.

The Sindoor formation will comprise two Rafale jets, two MiG-29s, two Su-30s and one Jaguar aircraft—the combat jets that were part of Operation Sindoor—serving as a powerful symbol of the dominance it established during the four-day hostilities with Pakistan last May, the officials stated.

A total of 29 aircraft, including four transport planes and nine helicopters, will be part of the flypast.

The other platforms to feature in the flypast are Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH), Apache choppers, Indian Navy's P8I maritime surveillance aircraft and Mi-17 helicopters.

These platforms will display a variety of  formations, including Sindoor, Dhwaj, Prahar, Garud, Arjan, Varuna and Vajrang.

Operation Sindoor was launched on the intervening night of May 6  and 7, 2025, in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people. The well-coordinated strikes carried out by the Indian Armed Forces precisely hit nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and PoK, killing over 100 terrorists, their trainers, handlers, and associates.

The strikes triggered four days of intense military clashes that ended with an understanding to stop the military actions on May 10.

Operation Sindoor marked an inflexion point in India’s journey towards technological self-reliance in military operations, whether in drone warfare, layered air defence, or electronic warfare, the defence ministery had earlier claimed, adding that it was also a "shining example of Tri-service coordination."
