The Jammu (Rural) Police on Sunday recovered a gun-mountable telescope, believed to be of Chinese origin, from the Sidhra area. It was a six-year-old boy who reportedly picked up the modern equipment from a garbage dump located in the Asrarabad locality of Sidhra, the police said.

It was the child's family that claimed the boy had found the object in a garbage dump on Sunday morning. The Special Operations Group (SOG) is conducting further inquiry into the matter, and the probe team has reassured the public that there is no need to panic, news agency PTI said.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was apprehended for questioning from Samba district after a "Pakistani" phone number was noticed on his mobile phone, Jammu and Kashmir Police told the press.

The development comes only days after security agencies intensified their vigil at various locations near the International Border, following intelligence warnings that the dense fog in Jammu may be used by cross-border terrorists to enter the country. Terror launchpads along the border opposite the Hiranagar, Ghagwal, Ramgarh, and Akhnoor areas in the Kathua–Samba–Jammu sector have been activated, intelligence inputs had warned the Indian Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

What are gun-mounted scopes?

Often referred to as weapon scopes or telescopic sights, weapon-mountable telescopes are optical sighting devices designed to be attached to firearms to help the user aim at distant targets. They are often simply called scopes. Rifle scopes and sniper scopes are the most common types of this equipment, which is also used by hunters in addition to the military.

However, they can also be used to spy on military movements such as patrols and scoutings from a safe distance without sounding alarms.
