An army deserter, wanted in an espionage case, was arrested by the Punjab Police while trying to escape to Nepal. Rajbir Singh, alias Fauji, was held in Raxaul town, located near the Indo-Nepal border in Motihari, Bihar.

A hand grenade and half a kilogram of heroin were confiscated from his possession, the Punjab Police confirmed. He is also among the accused in the conspiracy behind the grenade attack on a women's police station in Sirsa, Haryana.

Fauji landed in the net of the security agencies not long after Chirag, a known associate of the ex-military man, was arrested. A resident of Punjab’s Fazilka, Chirag was arrested with a 9mm pistol and 407 grams of heroin in his possession.

Chirag played a crucial role in Rajbir Singh’s vile network as he was a vital link in the narcotics supply chain, the police found out. They were both accused in the conspiracy behind the grenade attack on a women's police station, as they are believed to have delivered the hand grenades to Gurjant Singh, from Amritsar Rural. The funds provided to Gurjant were further passed on to the assailants and were utilised for carrying out the said grenade attack, news agency PTI quoted the police department as saying.

Who is Rajbir Singh?

Preliminary investigation revealed that Fauji joined the Army in 2011 and deserted in February 2025 after he and his associates were booked in an espionage case, registered under the Official Secrets Act at the Gharinda police station in Amritsar (Rural) earlier this year. Singh has since been arrested by the Haryana Police.

In 2022, Fauji came into contact with some Pakistan-based entities through social media. What started off as deals involving heroin consignments soon made way for the supply of sensitive and confidential military information and the introduction of other Army personnel to these handlers.

Pakistan-based handlers were in the process of facilitating his escape from India to Europe via Nepal when he was nabbed by the probe team, as he confessed during interrogation.
