Global tech giant Google announced a sweeping series of artificial intelligence initiatives across India, targeting critical sectors such as agriculture, education, and small business development.
These were unveiled by Preeti Lobana, VP and Country Manager, India, Google, and Lila Ibrahim, Chief AI Readiness Officer, Google DeepMind. As per the official statement, these programmes look to scale real-world progress by combining advanced technology with India's digital public infrastructure and deep technical talent pool.
In the agricultural sector, Google DeepMind and Google.org are collaborating with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and other academic partners to build an open-access genetic atlas for climate-resilient crops like sorghum, commonly known as jowar.
Drawing on a comprehensive genebank of over 44,000 distinct seeds from more than 90 countries, the initiative pairs machine learning with advanced genetic analysis to help breeders develop robust crop varieties much faster than traditional trial-and-error methods.
Furthermore, Google's Agricultural Understanding models are expanding through public preview after successfully powering digital governance platforms like Gujarat’s Krushi Pragati via Amnex, which has delivered millions of advisories to farmers.
Dr Stanford Blade, Deputy Director General for Research and Innovation at ICRISAT, stated: "We are excited to partner with Google and bring AI's potential to the mission of transforming dryland agriculture".
"We aim for this collaboration to unlock the global potential of indigenous climate-resilient crops like sorghum, and to empower the agri ecosystem with cutting-edge tools that strengthen global food security and safeguard present and future generations," added Dr Blade.
The tech giant is also expanding its Google AI Educator Series following successful training sessions for over 80,000 educators since its launch in May.
New partnerships with regional state governments, including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Sikkim, alongside the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, will bring free, self-paced online training modules in several regional Indian languages later this month, according to Google India.
Additionally, the introduction of ATL Saathi in Atal Tinkering Labs is helping students and teachers engage directly with STEM curricula using Gemini-powered desktop applications, Google India said.
To support India’s immense network of micro, small, and medium enterprises, Google.org is committing $15 million in funding to The/Nudge. This substantial investment will back innovative solutions designed to ease small enterprises' access to formal credit, market discovery, and regulatory compliance, the tech giant announced.
Subhashree Dutta, CEO of the^delta called it "one of the largest philanthropic commitments to India's MSMEs" and stated: "Through stage-gated grand challenges, we will back grounded innovation that tackles compliance, market access, quality and credit together, because these barriers reinforce one another. The open standards it leaves behind will make India's MSMEs more competitive, creditworthy and globally visible, supporting the millions of small businesses that power India's growth.
