Sensex, Nifty swing between gains and losses as rupee strengthens
Will FM comments, appreciating currency help stock markets trade in green?
Indian equities experienced a choppy trading session on Wednesday morning, fluctuating between marginal gains and losses as the market sought stability. A strengthening rupee provided some support against elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign institutional selling. The currency's appreciation followed targeted intervention by the Reserve Bank of India to curb excessive volatility and ease dollar demand. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reassured investors that India's macroeconomic fundamentals remain robust despite prevailing external challenges. Overall, market participants continue to balance domestic policy measures against ongoing global economic pressures.

Indian equities traded in a narrow, choppy range on Wednesday morning, with the Sensex moving between a loss of 139 points and a gain of 161 points against Tuesday’s close. The Nifty 50 fluctuated between a decline of 57 points and an advance of 36 points, as a strengthening rupee offered some relief against elevated crude oil prices and continued foreign selling.
The Sensex touched a morning low of 72,894.41 and a high of 73,195.26—a 300-point window. The Nifty moved between 22,663.80 and 22,757.95, spanning 94 points.
The rupee appreciated 44 paise to 94.92 against the dollar in early trade, after opening at 95.05. Its recovery followed RBI measures aimed at easing near-term dollar demand and restricting speculative foreign-exchange exposure.
The currency’s improvement comes a day after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the RBI would continue efforts to prevent excessive volatility, rather than fix the rupee at a particular level.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Tuesday, she attributed much of the currency’s volatility to external challenges and maintained that India’s macroeconomic fundamentals remained sound.
The RBI’s measures include a special dollar window for public-sector oil marketing companies and tighter rules governing foreign-exchange derivatives.
A stronger rupee can soften the domestic cost of dollar-priced imports, although rising oil prices remain a counterweight: Brent crude was up 0.57 per cent at $106.29 a barrel in Wednesday’s early futures trade.
Despite Tuesday’s 1000-point Sensex rally, foreign institutional investors remained net sellers, offloading ₹1,305.13 crore of equities. The morning’s alternating gains and losses point to an unsettled market trying to find a footing.
