Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and his son Neville have filed a caveat petition in the Mumbai City Civil Court naming fellow trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, in a precautionary move amid disagreements over Noel Tata’s position and decision-making authority, as per ground reports from ET.
The filing, dated October 7, 2026, names Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Darius Khambata and Bhaskar Bhat, as per the report. THE WEEK has reached out to Tata Trusts and is awaiting an official response.
Caveat is not a case
A caveat is a request for notice and an opportunity to participate when a relevant application comes before a court. Under Section 148A of the Code of Civil Procedure, the court must notify the caveator if such an application is filed, while the applicant must supply the relevant papers after receiving notice of the caveat.
It acts more like a procedural safeguard and not a court ruling on the underlying dispute or a finding against the named trustees.
The report also linked the court filing to a wider precautionary exercise involving 84 caveats before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner by Tata Trusts entities, excluding the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Those filings reportedly invoke Sections 41D, 41E and 67 of the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act.
ET, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Srinivasan has sought scrutiny of Noel Tata’s appointment and continued position as a perpetual trustee, as well as the basis for his chairmanship. He has reportedly also sought restrictions on Noel Tata’s participation and voting in trust decisions concerning Tata Sons nominees, representatives or proxies.
Back in October 2024, Tata Trusts announced its appointment of Noel Tata as chairman of the constituent trusts and designated him chairman of Tata Trusts. These philanthropic trusts hold 66 per cent of Tata Sons’ equity.
