If you thought SUVs were a passing fad, here's some news for you—they are here not only to stay but to define the entire auto industry going forward.

August 2026 was particularly impressive for the Indian passenger vehicle market, according to the latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). And a huge chunk of it was thanks to a marked shift in consumer demand toward utility vehicles (UVs) and sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

SIAM data revealed that total domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales soared to a record 4,39,309 units in August 2026, up 36.5 per cent year-on-year versus 3,21,901 units in August 2025.

And utility vehicles seem to have firmly established themselves as the undisputed engine of this market expansion.

Domestic sales of utility vehicles revved up by 39.2 per cent YoY in August 2026 to reach 2,50,084 units. And this was not limited to just one month.

Taking the overall April–August window this year, domestic utility vehicle sales climbed 30.7 per cent YoY to 13,62,527 units. It is worth noting that this accounted for over two-thirds of total domestic passenger vehicle sales of 20,44,696 units.

Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, said, “Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers have recorded the highest-ever sales of August in 2026. In August 2026, Passenger Vehicles posted sales of 4.39 lakh units with double-digit growth of 36.5 per cent”.

And it is not just the domestic market that these oversized cars are finding demand—utility vehicle demand increased in India's automotive exports as well.

When traditional passenger car exports dropped 16 per cent YoY during April–August 2026 to 1,54,190 units, utility vehicle exports soared by 22.7 per cent YoY to reach 2,03,582 units.

The five-month period also saw India's overall passenger vehicle production spike by more than 20 per cent YoY to 24,12,990 units.

“India’s automobile industry is passing through a robust growth phase...” Menon weighed in, “strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains are creating a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories”.
