Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday renewed his push for Swadeshi and self-reliance, while commending people for the economy’s 7.8 per cent growth in the April-June quarter.

In a video message posted on Instagram, Modi reiterated his appeal to Indians to avoid foreign holidays, weddings overseas and unnecessary purchases of gold, arguing that greater emphasis on Swadeshi and self-reliance would help lay the foundation for a developed India by 2047.

“I want to congratulate the people of the country for 7.8 per cent GDP growth. It has been possible due to their collective resolve and efforts,” Modi said, attributing the performance to the country’s ability to withstand a period of heightened global instability.

“The world is drowned in war. There is news of war all around. The world is surrounded by crises. The supply chain is completely disturbed. From the Covid era in 2020 till today, stability is not visible anywhere. Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” the Prime Minister said.

India’s economy grew a faster-than-expected 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter, underscoring the resilience of domestic demand even as the war in Iran and the resulting disruption in energy markets raised concerns about its impact on economic momentum.

Growth in the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year eased from a robust 8.6 per cent in the previous quarter, but remained significantly above expectations, despite the economic uncertainty triggered by the conflict and its impact on global energy markets.

Modi, in his video message, took a veiled swipe at the Opposition, accusing “certain people” in India of trying to spread negativity and falsehood while the economy continued to expand.

“We have to maintain the speed of our growth. We have to grow. And for that we must become self-reliant. The youth's dreams need our hard work to be realised. Let's not be lacking in efforts,” he said.

The Prime Minister had earlier hailed the GDP figures on Monday as a “herculean feat”, taking a dig at those who had questioned the state of the Indian economy.

“Doomsayers were doomed and India bloomed yet again,” he wrote.
