Nitin Gadkari may not mind a little bit of sugarcane to juice up your car, but when it comes to the rest of the driving experience, he wants nothing short of Hollywood-style sci-fi features to run India’s traffic on its highways.
The one that grabbed most eyeballs recently was the one where ‘cars talk to each other’, a catchy way to refer to vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems to manage anything from distance between vehicles, warnings about pedestrians and incoming traffic, as well as obstructions ahead and the state of road infra – mandated to be implemented from October next year.
But that’s not all. From big trucks to have air-conditioned driver cabins to blind spot information systems, driver drowsiness detection and alert systems (some cab services have already started trying this out) and lane departure warning systems, the new-fangled innovations could well transform transport in the country by ziplining it up the value chain.
Advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS, are at the heart of the new technology the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) wants in place as soon as possible.
“The shift in thinking is significant; safety is no longer only about protecting occupants after a crash – it is about detecting risk early enough to prevent the crash altogether,” said Nisarg Pandya, CEO and founder of DriveBuddyAI, a tech startup building systems for vehicle safety and fleet management.
While air-conditioned driver cabins rule has already come into effect, the others are slated for the coming months and years: October 1 next year should see the revised braking standards coming into effect, making Electronic Stability Control and Advanced Emergency Braking Systems mandatory for trucks. Three months later, another clutch of advancements are to be put into effect – Blind Spot Information Systems, Moving-Off Information Systems, Driver Drowsiness Detection and Alert Systems as well as Lane Departure Warning Systems.
Technology apart, the new systems are also expected to be ‘intelligent’, interpreting the signals they receive, judging the level of risk and responding at the right moment with the right intervention.
That comes with its own worries about international technology and whether it will be feasible enough on chaotic Indian roads. “The real work ahead isn’t fitting these systems into vehicles – it’s making sure they perform reliably in India’s driving environment,” said Pandya. “That takes time: integrating cameras, sensors, vehicle controls and software, then validating behaviour across the full range of Indian road, traffic and weather conditions, not a lab condition borrowed from somewhere else.”
The solution will include computer vision, deep learning, multi-camera perception and behavioural analytics. The worries in India range from the sheer number of vehicles to deciphering which movement needs a timely automated response and which one could be ignored. For example, not every lane change on a road where lane discipline itself is inconsistent needs the automation to react with a solution.
That is the real challenge, says Pandya, “from isolated safety features to an intelligent safety system that understands both the road and the human behind the wheel.”
Vehicle integration and driver acceptance will be critical to the success of the new measures. With various types of vehicles, makes, and configurations, making vehicles compliant with the new technologies within the deadlines will be a gargantuan task in a country like India. How drivers accept it – not just support the new measures, but also adapt to it and follow its cues will be crucial. And frankly, in a nation with a hugely under-educated driver population and a civil and police infrastructure that is creaking at the seams, it is something of a challenge.
Yet, with some of the highest rates of accidents in the world, India cannot afford to give excuses and turn its face away from these upgrades any longer. Advanced regions like Europe are even further ahead, with many of the features India is introducing already in place since 2024 (some getting implemented in phases running up to 2029). Many other countries, including the US and Japan, have been mandating automatic emergency braking to become standard, though there are legal issues that have cropped up in the former.
