At its 72nd Foundation Day, Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, announced a significant ₹100-crore investment in a new Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, developed in collaboration with Nvidia, signaling a strategic pivot towards AI to drive India's technological future and its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. This substantial self-funded initiative aims to bolster India's AI research capabilities and provide access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure, positioning BIT Mesra as a global leader in the field. The institute also revealed plans for academic and research collaborations with three US universities and memoranda of understanding with several IITs to foster innovation and knowledge exchange, underscoring a broader institutional focus on producing not just skilled graduates, but also innovators, researchers, and job creators, a sentiment echoed by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, who emphasized the critical role of institutions like BIT Mesra in achieving "Viksit Bharat" by 2047 and a distinguished alumnus's ₹5-crore donation further supporting the entrepreneurial vision.

Seventy-two years after it was founded to produce engineers for a young nation, Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, is now betting big on artificial intelligence to shape India's technological future. At its 72nd Foundation Day celebrations on Wednesday, the institute unveiled an ambitious ₹100-crore investment in a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence in collaboration with Nvidia, while announcing new academic partnerships, research collaborations and a renewed focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.

The celebrations, attended by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar as the chief guest, reflected a common theme running through every address: India's journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 will depend not just on creating skilled graduates but on producing innovators, researchers and job creators.

Congratulating the institute, Governor Gangwar said BIT Mesra had made an outstanding contribution to nation-building over the past seven decades and must continue to lead India's technological transformation.

"Artificial intelligence, semiconductors and start-ups are the needs of the day. Institutions like BIT Mesra have a critical role in preparing young minds to contribute towards the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047," he said.

The centrepiece of the event, however, was Vice-Chancellor Prof. Indranil Manna's announcement that BIT Mesra would invest ₹100 crore from its own resources to establish an advanced AI Centre of Excellence with Nvidia.

The project, one of the biggest investments ever made by the institute, is expected to significantly strengthen India's AI research ecosystem while giving BIT Mesra access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure comparable with leading institutions worldwide.

"Our commitment has always been towards nation-building. Our motto is to make India Aatmanirbhar. This Centre of Excellence is part of that vision," Manna said.

He said the institute was not relying on government grants for the project, underlining that the entire investment would come from BIT Mesra's internal resources.

According to Manna, the AI centre is expected to serve not only the institute's students and faculty but also researchers, industries and research organisations working on advanced computing problems across disciplines.

"Our aim is to emerge as a leader in artificial intelligence and stand at par with the best institutions in the world," he said.

The vice-chancellor also announced that BIT Mesra is in talks with three universities in the United States for academic and research collaborations. Simultaneously, the institute will sign memoranda of understanding with IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Patna and IIT Dhanbad to deepen cooperation in research, faculty exchange and innovation.

Highlighting the institute's academic strength, Manna said BIT Mesra currently has nearly 12,000 students and about 660 faculty members.

The AI initiative, he said, is expected to open new opportunities in emerging fields ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to climate science, agriculture and semiconductor technologies, besides giving students exposure to next-generation computing systems.

Delivering the Foundation Day lecture, IIT Bhubaneswar Director Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar said India's engineering education must move beyond technical knowledge and place equal emphasis on communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

"The real test of communication is whether you can explain your idea to your grandmother," he said, urging faculty members to integrate communication skills into every engineering course rather than treating them as a separate subject.

Karmalkar also called upon students to aspire to become entrepreneurs instead of merely seeking employment.

"We should become job providers, not just job seekers. Collaboration between institutions, industry and researchers is the key to innovation. At the same time, students must develop critical thinking to solve tomorrow's problems," he said.

Adding an emotional touch to the celebrations, distinguished alumnus Madan Mohan Mohanka, chairman of Tega Industries and a member of the 1964 graduating batch, announced a donation of ₹5 crore to his alma mater.

Mohanka said India needs far more entrepreneurs if it hopes to become a global economic powerhouse and urged financial institutions to rethink their lending practices.

"We need more job creators. Banks and financial institutions must support deserving entrepreneurs and provide loans without insisting on collateral in every case," he said.

The announcement drew applause from students, faculty and alumni present at the event.
