Indian stock, currency, and commodities markets will remain closed on Thursday due to holiday for the Mumbai municipal corporations.

Both bourses, the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), are closed for trading on January 15, 2026. The commodity market, despite being closed in the 9 am–5 pm session, would reportedly be operational for the evening session starting at 5 pm

Why are Indian stock markets closed today?

The BSE and NSE will be observing a trading holiday today in light of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections. In a circular issued earlier this week, both stock exchanges notified about the holiday.

The BMC Elections 2026 have become more relevant to Indian markets since Mumbai hosts the headquarters of both bourses. The exchanges also notified that trading in equities, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts would stay shut on January 15.

Apart from today, the stock markets will be closed for one more holiday this month: January 26, Republic Day.
