Praveen Kumar Kapoor, co-founder and promoter of the SRS Group, has been deported to India from the United States after years of evading Indian law enforcement.
This high-profile move followed the publication of a Red Corner Notice by Interpol at the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) request, the watchdog body announced on Thursday.
Kapoor was intercepted after arriving at Newark International Airport in the US, where authorities cancelled his B1/B2 business visa and denied him entry.
He was subsequently flown back to New Delhi on November 2, 2025, where Indian law enforcement, acting on a Lookout Circular, immediately detained him.
What did Praveen Kumar Kapoor allegedly do?
The roots of this action trace back to 81 FIRs filed at police stations across Faridabad, Delhi, and by the CBI, detailing allegations that SRS Group cheated investors and banks out of around Rs 2,200 crore.
The ED’s investigation found that the group lured investors with promises of high returns and invested their money in numerous residential and commercial projects.
Rather than utilise these funds for their stated purpose, hundreds of shell companies were created to launder investor money, making it extremely difficult for authorities and victims to trace where their money ended up.
Over the years, Kapoor and two other SRS Group promoter-directors, Jitender Kumar Garg and Sunil Jindal, disappeared from the public eye and evaded repeated summons.
Prosecution complaints were eventually filed against them by the ED, leading a special court in Gurugram to issue non-bailable warrants and declare Kapoor a “Proclaimed Offender.”
Asset attachment orders worth over Rs 2,215 crore have already been issued in the ongoing probe.
With Kapoor’s return, he faces active charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), with prosecution and further court proceedings underway.
The ED has also initiated actions under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA), seeking to have Kapoor, Garg, and Jindal formally declared as fugitives to enable further asset recovery. Investigations and efforts to extradite the two remaining absconding promoter-directors are ongoing.
