India will emerge as the next big destination for semiconductors. The country will come out with a made-in-India chip by December 2024, IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said and added that this paradigm shift has happened after the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the USA.
The first semiconductor chip will be rolled out of the US-based Micron Technology which is setting up its plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The company will manufacture chips and equipment with an investment of $400 million. This deal was signed during Modi’s visit US visit.
The minister, while addressing a press conference in the national capital, said the US will also help India train 60,000 engineers and together the countries will create cutting-edge technology.
The minister said under PM Modi, India's stature has risen unprecedentedly on the global stage. Calling Modi's visit to the US “historic,” he said the standing ovations the PM got while addressing the Joint Session of the US Congress showcased a deep respect not only for Modi but for 140 crore Indians.
“It is a recognition of India’s prowess. It is a recognition of India’s position in the geopolitics order. Earlier, during such visits, the talks were about Kashmir and Pakistan. The primary focus this time was technological progress. This is the fundamental change. Both powers can collaborate in the fields of semiconductors, jet engines, defence technologies, space, AI, and quantum computing. The process has changed from 180 degrees in the past,” Vaishnaw said.
“India is now considered as joint development partner. This is the paradigm shift. In the global geopolitical scenario, India is considered an equal, and USA and India have become a major power and drive to address the critical issues before the world,” Vaishnaw added.
Quoting Biden, the minister said, “This will be the most consequential relationship of 21 century.” “This visit was talked about across the world. This is a milestone marking the change in the world order,” he added.
During the visit, 35 joint research projects in emerging technologies, like quantum computing, semiconductor, and AI were signed. In the telecom sector, America evaluated India’s 4G stack and found it to be very advanced, the minister said.
