India's solar power installed capacity is expected to touch 300 GW by 2030, even as the government is focused on reducing imports.

Vineet Mittal, director and co-founder of Navitas Solar, a leading solar panel manufacturing company, said on Thursday that the installed capacity, which is 60 GW now, is expected to touch 300 GW by 2030.

Mittal, whose company raised $5 million to expand its manufacturing capacity by 1.2 GW per annum, said earlier the government focused on how the cost can be reduced rather than looking into where the material is sourced from. Now it is about manufacturing in India and reducing the imports, he added.

As far as Navitas Solar is concerned, its current installed capacity is 500 MW.

Among its investors are promoters of Parishi Diamond Group from Surat, and Lemon Emerging Ventures LLP.

According to him, in the pre-Covid stage, the imports were 70:30 and post-Covid it is almost 50:50.

The biggest challenge in promoting this renewable source of energy is to lay the transmission lines and look out for land, said Mittal, whose company has catered to over 700 customers, including government, semi-government and private.

Mittal told THE WEEK that in Bhaurch they are working on a project where vegetables can be grown under the solar panels without the help of direct sunlight. A small project of 5 MW is expected to be ready in about six months and the company will also try drip irrigation in the area, he said.
