The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (14C) has issued an alert about an Indonesian hacker group targeting government websites.

An official release by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (14C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that all states and Union Territories have been put on alert as 12,000 government sites are prone to the attacks.

"It has been reported that websites of the State and Central government are potentially being targeted," said the release announcing the cyber attack.

The "hacktivist" group from Indonesia is carrying out Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks which overwhelm a computer network by bringing in too much traffic and thus disrupting normal operations, said the release.

It is one of the major cyber attacks targeting the Indian websites after the recent ransomware attack at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). For several days the hospital database was unavailable putting the patients and healthcare system in jeopardy.

In 2022, the Indian government recorded 19 ransomware attacks against various government organisations.

DDoS attacks refer to the intentional paralysing of a computer network by flooding it with data sent simultaneously from many individual computers, reported moneycontrol.

The alert issued also said that the hacktivist group had released a list of government websites that it claims to be targeting, which included state and Central government websites.

Last year, a Malaysia hacktivist group targeted Indian government websites over a political turmoil that erupted over comments made against Prophet Muhammad, reported moneycontrol.
