landt

L&T’s Metallurgical & Material Handling (MMH) strategic business group has distinction of being country’s largest EPC player offering turnkey plant solutions to its customers in Minerals & Metals sector. It has delivered several complex greenfield and brownfield projects over last few decades. The backbone for MMH’s success continues to be its advanced Computer Aided design, engineering, technological and process know-how of complex systems and project execution capabilities over the years. MMH’s core competence is further enhanced and enriched by its Products Business and Manufacturing Prowess.

L&T MMH’s manufacturing business has been in forefront of introducing latest products and technologies to its esteemed customers in cement, mining, construction, steel, ports and other core Industrial sectors. It designs, manufactures and services various products like Crushing Solutions, Surface Miners, Sand Plants, Material Handling Equipment (Stacker Reclaimers, Wagon Tipplers), High Speed Railway Equipment (Full Span Straddle Carrier, Transporter Girder, Launching Girder), Torpedo Ladle Cars, Steel Plant Equipment and various other customized products tailor made to requirements. These products are manufactured at two if its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Kansbahal, Odisha and Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.

The manufacturing business has been in existence since 60’s. It was primarily set-up with an intent to support our nation’s ambition to support and grow steel Industry by localizing the manufacturing of critical equipment. Over multiple decades, the intent to serve Indian industry’s ambitions remains just the same. The product portfolio kept evolving over the years with changing needs and economic conditions of the country.

Over the years, Product Portfolio encompassed complex Steel Plant Equipment, Paper Plants, Complete range of crushing solutions for variety of mineral applications (ranging from 50 tons per hour to 2000 tons per hour), mega size material handling equipment like Stackers Reclaimers (upto 10,000 tons per hour) and wagon tipplers/ tandom tipplers to name a few.

With our Country and Industry shifting its preferences to safer and greener portfolios, MMHwas first to introduce India’s indigenously designed and manufactured Surface Miners for coal and limestone mining applications. Surface Miner did away completely with hazardous blasting at mines and brings in more safety, efficiency and economy in the whole process of mining.

Promoting eco-friendly construction in line with GoI’s initiatives, MMH’s Product business came up with indigenized the revolutionary engineered e7 - Sand Plants. Today, many of our sand plants are helping growth of our country’s economy and ecology too, without compromising on quality of sand – the largest consumed building material.

When our Honorable Prime Minister called upon Indian Industry leaders for enhanced local manufacturing through Make in India initiatives and Atma Nirbhar Bharat, Product BU contributed its bit towards a project of Nation’s pride (Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project). It designed and manufacture country’s first and the largest full span launching High Speed Railway equipment during challenging pandemic times. Honorable Minister of Railway (Sri Ashwini Vaishnaw) himself joined virtually to flag-off the first equipment on Sep 9th, this year. National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) showcased the HSR equipment built by L&T and dedicated its post to engineers of the country on ‘Engineers Day’.

The journey of Digitalization in Product BU has taken strong roots across its manufacturing processes and remote IoT operated supplied equipment. Supporting the initiatives of digitalization & smart solutions, Our Design &Service engineers  in Kansbahal factory in Odisha can now monitor all the operational parameters of Sand Plant operating at a remote customer quarry location in any part of the country. The live equipment performance generated through remote IoT is captured in database and analyzed thru Power BI dashboards which is used to help serve the customer better for while enhancing the Product design and manufacture.

Commenting on the transformation Mr. D.K.Sen, Whole-time Director and Sr Executive Vice President (Development Projects) said, “L&T’s MMH business is at forefront in Make in India & digitalisation initiatives by helping customers gain the benefits of efficiency, productivity and safety. It has been our endeavour to usher in digital transformation at the two production facilities as well as project sites. As a result, our dependency on men, material availability or any unforeseen disruptions eg. pandemic etc. has considerably reduced..

The material management at Kansbahal plant include QR code-based tracking from raw material to finished assembly while at Kanchipuram Digital stores for consumables management is in vogue.  Welding consumables handling process has been digitalized for better usage of consumables and reduce the manual data recording with QR code system.

The entire quality control process, at Kancheepuram, for clients has been digitalised with Conquer app for the process of inspection call generation, report of inspection, shop observations and Non-Compliance reporting. Virtual Reality based application Help Lighting is helpful to inspect the work remotely for clients as well as the management.

Both the Kansbahal and Kanchipuram facilities are equipped with high precision CNC machinery while state-of-the-art fabrication and assembly facilities ensure timely delivery. Production hours against machine and labor are captured through QR code-based monitoring devices. Weigh bridges, EOT cranes, DG, Welding power sources and arc control systems are IOT-enabled and their utilization and productivity are tracked through Asset Insight App.

With India’s economy poised to witness a surge in growth in coming years especially in Steel, Mining, Cement, Infrastructure and other core Industries, manufacturing units of MMH all geared up to fulfil its commitment to continue delivering safer, higher quality, superior technology, smarter and greener products.
